Introducing the New Document Editor

The new document editor is a redesigned experience that gives you more flexibility and control over your documents — from adding new pages and blocks to layering elements with precision. This article walks you through what's new and how to use it.

Switching to the New Editor

To try the new editor, click Classic Editor in the top navigation bar, then select Try the New Editor. You can toggle back to the classic editor at any time while we continue to refine the experience.

The Editor Layout

The new editor is organized into four main sections along the left panel:

  • Settings — Global document settings

  • Pages — All pages in your document, with search

  • Blocks — Draggable content elements (images, shapes, text)

  • Images — All images associated with the document

  • Layers — Control the stacking order of elements on a page

The interface is intentionally designed to mirror the email editor — if you know how to build an email in BuildOut, you already know the basics of the document editor.

Pages

How Pages Work

All of your document's pages are now shown in a single, unified list — no more juggling multiple buckets or page libraries. This replaces the previous multi-step workflow of adding pages to a library before they appeared in your document.

Adding Pages

To insert a new page:

  1. Click between any two existing pages in the Pages panel.

  2. Click the + icon that appears.

  3. Browse or search your available pages in the modal that opens — including any you've previously saved.

  4. Select the pages you want to add (e.g., Property Summary, Property Details), then click Add to Document.

The pages will be inserted at the position you selected and the view will scroll to them automatically.

Creating a Blank Page

You can also insert a new blank page and build it from scratch using blocks.

Blocks

Blocks are draggable content elements you can add to any page. There are currently three block types:

Block

Description

Image

Add an image from your document's image library

Shape

Add a box (more shapes coming soon — circles, stars, etc.)

Text

Add a freeform text element

To add a block, drag it from the Blocks panel onto any page. Once placed, you can move, duplicate, or delete any block.

Note: At this time, you can drag and drop blocks onto existing templated pages, but you cannot rearrange the underlying structure of a template (e.g., moving a table or repositioning a template image).

Images

The Images panel shows all images associated with the current property listing. From here you can:

  • View all existing listing images

  • Add new images that are specific to this document (these won't flow back up to the listing itself)

Coming soon: A global image library where you can store and reuse assets across emails, listings, documents, and more — without needing to re-upload them each time.

Layers

When working on a page with multiple elements, the Layers panel lets you control the stacking order of those elements. This is especially useful on blank pages where you're building layouts from scratch.

To reorder layers, simply drag elements up or down in the Layers panel.

Header Tools

The editor header has been simplified and now includes:

  • Breadcrumbs — Quickly navigate from a selected element back to its parent

  • Zoom controls — Zoom in and out of your document

  • Undo / Redo — Step backward or forward through your changes

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use the old editor?

  • Yes. The toggle between Classic Editor and New Editor will remain available while we work through any remaining issues and finalize a deprecation plan.

Can I rearrange elements within a template?

  • Not yet. You can add new blocks on top of existing pages, but restructuring templated content (like moving images or tables) is a capability we're actively working on.

Will images I add to a document appear on the listing?

  • No. Images added directly to a document stay document-specific and do not sync back to the listing.

Can I add brand-new content to a page, or only edit what is already there?

  • You can add net-new content! The new editor has drag-and-drop blocks (image, shape, and text) that drop onto an existing templated page or a brand-new page.

Can I build a page from scratch?

  • Yes! The page picker has a New blank page option. It inserts wherever you clicked the plus icon.

Can I undo a change?

  • Yes! The new editor has dedicated undo and redo buttons.

Can I save a page I built to reuse later?

  • Yes, you can either either make a change to an existing standard custom template page (dragging in new text, for example) or create a new blank page, and save that page for reuse later.

How do I find and add a page now?

  • Click the plus icon between pages to open the page picker modal. It lists every available page you have access to, with search and an orientation filter for portrait or landscape.

Why don't I have the ability to add new pages / drag and drop new blocks?

  • The ability to use these features are tied to a permission titled 'Can Add Custom Content to Documents' that must be toggled on for your account. If you are unable to do this and feel like you should, please reach out to your office's 'Can Manage Company' user to look into this for you!
